PEACE BOAT STATEMENT TO THE UN CONFERENCE ON THE WORLD FINANCIAL AND ECONOMIC CRISIS AND ITS IMPACT ON DEVELOPMENT

UN Conference on the World CrisisOn June 24-26, the United Nations convened a three-day Conference on the World Financial and Economic Crisis and its Impact on Development in New York aimed at identifying emergency and long-term responses to mitigate the impact of the crisis, and initiating a dialogue on how to tackle it.

On the first day of the summit, Peace Boat issued a statement calling for profound and fundamental reforms of the international system that led to today's multiple crises of food, climate, energy, and trade, as well as social and financial systems.

Based on the principles of the Global Article 9 Campaign and referring to the Global Article 9 Declaration to Abolish War, the statement calls on developed countries not to use the current crisis as an excuse in meeting their commitments towards achieving the UN Millennium Goals and urges governments to "honor their international commitment including the UN Charter and the MDGs as a first step toward building lasting sustainable prosperity and social justice for all people."

Thus, in addition to mobilizing new innovative sources of financing development, member states must build upon Article 26 of the UN Charter, and "reconsider their spending priorities, reduce their military expenses and reallocate part of their military budget into sustainable development and peace promotion."

Peace Boat's statement comes in support of the repeated calls by many in the development community for a timetable to achieve aid commitments and speed up the delivery of aid in order to ease up the suffering of the poorest and worsened by the crisis.

WORLD LAWYERS RENEW THEIR SUPPORT TO THE GLOBAL ARTICLE 9 CAMPAIGN

On June 6-10, 2009, the International Association of Democratic Lawyers (IADL) held its XVIIth International Congress in Hanoi, Vietnam.

About 400 lawyers, judges, jurists, law teachers and students from over 30 countries came together to  debate and discuss the theme of "Law and Lawyers in the context of globalization: for peace, development and independence of the judiciary".

The Japanese delegation strongly represented the Global Article 9 Campaign at the Congress..

XVIIth International Congress of the International Association of Democratic Lawyers (IADL)In its Hanoi Declaration, the Congress reaffirmed its commitment to peace and explicitly "renewed its support for the Global Article 9 Campaign led by Japanese lawyers" and "urge[d] all lawyers and jurists to work for the implementation in every country of the Japanese Constitution's "No War" clause."

In addition, IADL's Congress issued a series of resolutions on different topics. Among them, the Hanoi Peace Appeal emphasizes that "the future and security of the world will not be secured by military means but by ambitious programmes of economic, social and cultural development" and "insists on the redistribution towards the needs of sustainable human development of all wealth currently squandered on military uses, which serves only to benefit merchants of death and which can only lead to the ultimate destruction of mankind."
